Stop Your Dog From Eating Poop!

Of course you don’t want your little puppy’s spirit broken or want him to act like a robot, but there are some things which can’t be allowed.

You have to be leader of the pack first of all. Fewer problems arise when there is a strong, smart leader. The attitude you have prevents most problems. You have to understand that your puppy can’t act like an adult, but at the same time, do not give him too much flack even though he is learning.

A good place to start is knowing that being in charge is your right and duty as your pet’s owner. The puppy is made to look to a loving but strong leader to give him guidance and direction. While you love and protect him, you also need to set rules and limits.

One problem that can’t be tolerated is the stool eating habit. Some pups will do this out of sheer boredom. Others do it after they have been scolded for housebreaking mistakes. It’s as if they are trying to destroy the evidence. Many people think of this as an unnatural habit, but it’s really not.

When your pooch was very young, his mom ate the feces of her puppies to keep the den clean. However when you hold your puppy to kiss him, you want his breath to remind you of milk. Also if your pet eats poop he may infest himself with parasites that you’re working eliminate. He can also get parasites from eating the poop of other dogs.

To stop this habit, you have to clean up right after your puppy eliminates. When you take him outside, keep him on his leash and don’t allow him to sniff the waste materials of other dogs. It may take you a few weeks to break him of this habit particularly if he is using paper while you’re at work. Avoid freaking out if your puppy cleans his own mess. It will end with time.

In any training especially when preventing and correcting problems, you have to look at it from the puppy’s point of view, too. Sometimes you will think that what your puppy wants or does isn’t acceptable, a thing such as biting. Then there are times when you don’t mind what he wants to do if there is some control over it, like barking. Stop and look at things through a puppy’s eyes, and you will know what activities you should stop and those that can be redirected. This is the most humane and intelligent way to train your puppy.
